Both the U11 Girls and U15 Girls teams fell just short of reaching the finals of their respective divisions at Disney’s Presidents’ Day Soccer Festival, which was played at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex over Presidents’ Day weekend.
The U11 Hotspurs earned 4 points from their first two matches – a 2-1 win over Miami Premier, and a 2-2 draw with Asphalt Green (Manhattan, NY). That set up a matchup with West Pasco (FL), with the winner taking top spot in the group and earning a place in the final. With the match tied at 0-0 with 15 minutes remaining, the Hotspurs scored an apparent go-ahead goal, only to have it called back for a hand ball. Minutes later, the ‘Spurs came within inches of taking the lead, when a free kick from 25-yards out rattled off the crossbar. Heartbreakingly, the ball caromed out and resulted in a breakaway and, ultimately, a goal for West Pasco. The ‘Spurs battled hard for the remainder of the game but were unable to score an equalizer and fell 1-0. West Pasco went on to win the final and claim the tournament championship.
The U15 Attack opened the tournament with a well-played 1-0 win over Space Coast United (FL). Later that night, the Attack faced Canadian opponent White Eagles SC in what turned out to be an extremely physical match in which multiple yellow cards were issued. Despite battling hard for 70 minutes, a late goal for White Eagles proved to be the game’s only score, and the Attack fell 1-0. In need of a win in their third and final group game, the Attack came out swinging and scored four first-half goals en route to a 5-0 victory over GPS Orlando. The six points and +5 goal differential proved to be enough to put the Attack through to the semifinals and a matchup with unbeaten Coral Gables (FL). In a back-and-forth match between very evenly-matched teams, the Attack created multiple scoring chances, but were unable to find the back of the net. Coral Gables scored a late game-winner to down the Attack 1-0.
In addition to enjoying a weekend of great soccer, The 90 Lebco United players, parents, grandparents, and siblings who made the trip enjoyed the sunshine and warm weather in the Disney parks, lounging by the pool, day trips to the beach, and just hanging out. Congratulations to the players for a great showing in the tournament and a big thank you to the parents and coaches for making the trip happen!
